OOC: Exploring Online Fandom Roleplay

"OOC" is a book about online fandom roleplay. It's a deep dive into various online roleplaying subcultures, covering the different platforms people use and the reasons people roleplay! This book will preserve fandom history by including information gathered from dozens of interviews with roleplayers across many fandoms. The topics focused on will include how LGBTQ+ people often use roleplay to explore gender and sexuality, how roleplaying can be a helpful coping mechanism for difficult life circumstances, and how roleplayers develop their writing within the community! Trans and queer roleplayers will have their experiences highlighted. The book will also include discussion of some heavy topics, like child safety and predators in online roleplaying communities, and the positive and negative aspects of online roleplay will be discussed in an honest and nuanced way.The Kickstarter is live now!

Who's Writing This?

I'm Jack, an author and editor who has been roleplaying online for roughly 15 years now. I started at the age of 10 and have roleplayed across various fandoms and platforms. As someone who is trans and who has ADHD, I have a particular interest in how neurodivergence and gender exploration play a key part in why people roleplay.I've previously published a book about transmasculine people's experiences in sex work, and have written articles on the topic of transness and sex work for multiple publications. This project is a bit of a departure from the topics I usually write about, but it is something I am passionate about and I know other people also care about the topic deeply. You can find my Tumblr here, my Instagram here and my website here!
